BYZANTINE Set Title For New Album
December 23, 2004West Virginia-based "tech-metal" band BYZANTINE have set "...And They Shall Take Up Serpents" as the title of their sophomore album, tentatively due in May 2005 via Prosthetic Records.
The follow-up to this year's "The Fundamental Component" will include 10 tracks, nine of which will be "brand new," according to a posting on the group's web site. The band will also be recording an as-yet-undisclosed cover song.
According to BYZANTINE guitarist/vocalist Chris Ojeda, the title of the CD was derived from the biblical quote "They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them."
"Through our research we have found that our home state, West Virginia, is the last state in the nation in which it is still legal to handle poisonous serpents in religious institutions," he explained.
"Snake handling has been a huge part of southern culture, especially in states like Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky.
"We thought that we needed to keep themes going from our previous album, one of which being our heritage."
